At least once a year we hold a hui ā-whānau. These hui are of special importance to our whānau Māori but are open to anyone wishing to attend. At these hui we report back on Māori student achievement, development of te reo Māori and tikanga at our school and any other relevant issues.
We seek to involve whānau across the school and we welcome any whānau members who have a particular skill to share or who wish to learn a skill we are currently working on ourselves. The following include some of the ways in which whānau have recently been involved at our kura.
Hui ā-whānau - Principal consultation In 2023 our whānau Māori were invited to a hui facilitated by our Lead Kaiako Māori to identify and share their expectations relating to the qualities they would like to see in our new principal (2024).

2025:
In Term One we held our community hangi. We were given phenomenal support from our whanau and we hosted over 230 people.
Special mention to the Griggs whanau who met us dollar for dollar in purchasing our own multi-kai cooker.
Thank you also to Greymouth High School for lending us their Jumbo multi-kai cooker, the Iraia whanau for lendng us their multi-kai cooker, and the Brooks whanau for donating to the school the Orion charcoal smoker.

Term Two Hui Whanau: we reviewed where our school staff and students are placed along the Poutama Reo continuum. Among our next steps are:
the placement of signage in te reo around our school environment and within classrooms.
uploading supporting material for workshops run during school time under a te Ao Māori lens.
staff continuation of te reo development for themselves and students.
developing depth of understanding of ‘who we are’, and where we come from/ whakapapa back to.
