Welcome to the te ao Māori site for Karoro School. On this page you will be able to see examples of how te reo and tikanga Māori are interwoven into our programmes at our kura / school. You will also find useful resources. Please scroll down to access these.
Ko wai mātou? Who are we?
Karoro School is named after the black backed gull that is native to our beaches. We are surrounded by our maunga (mountains) and look out to the Tasman Sea.
Poutini (a taniwha) swims up and down Te Tai Poutini / the West Coast, watching over this rohe (area). He also guards the pounamu (greenstone) which is a precious taonga from this area.
Our school sits in the town of Māwhera / Greymouth. The river Māwheranui runs through our town and its name means the wide running waters. Our local hapū is Kāti Waewae and our local iwi is Poutini Ngāi Tahu.

We believe that under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the New Zealand Curriculum, every child in Aotearoa has the right to learn and experience Māori language and culture. We see this as an important part of our learning.
